Baltimore: My overlooked new hometown

A City Of Neighborhoods

Baltimore has often been called a “City of Neighborhoods”. In that way it is reminiscent of Brooklyn, NY. In fact it is often used as a stand-in for Brooklyn in film and TV. There are scores of distinct neighborhoods in this city and admittedly I have so far been to only a handful of them. However, the diversity can be striking. This may seem strange considering the city is known for its omnipresent rowhouse, which should be a sign of uniformity. But there is a surprising number of architectural styles of rowhouse, reflecting different periods. Moreover, a neighborhood is more than its houses, it also encompasses their cultural treasures, vibes, and of course people of the neighborhood, which then give the seen-one-seen-them-all reputation of the rowhouse neighborhood quite a bit of interesting diversity. Just ask Brooklyn.
